TESCO'S SANDIACRE

NEW TESCO'S, STATION RD, SANDIACRE?
The TESCO planning application for a new store at Sandiacre is unlikely to be before Committee until the end of June at the earliest I am informed. I recently saw surveyors measuring up around the road junction. Presumably they will be sizing up the road proposals submitted as part of TESCO's application. There is a wealth of information that can be read online at the Erewash Borough web-site regarding the application, reference ERE/1210/0005. This proposal has already caused much debate in the area and no doubt loads of people will be coming to the Planning Committee to voice their views. I hope I can be there when it's discussed, it should be an interesting and no doubt passionate debate.

  1. How many Superstores can you get inside a mini ? That should have read Sandiacre, Long Eaton and Ilkeston.

We already have a Tesco's @ Long Eaton plus an ASDA, another Tesco's at both Chilwell and Ilkeston plus another superstore is proposed at the old Stanton site I understand.

Study of the application from Tesco shows proposals to add further residential properties to the rear. Sandiacre and Stapleford have almost merged into one and it looks like it's spreading to Long Eaton. We could call it 'Erewash New-town' !

Even with road improvements the bottle neck at the canal bridge end traffic lights will be a major problem and the local small traders of both Sandiacre and Stapleford will be far from happy.

  2. They are the fastest growing retailer in the UK and they attract both hostility and shoppers in almost equal measure.
Labour started the Sandiacre Streetscape improvements and introduced CCTV to boost the area and British Waterways did canal side landscaping to enhance the attractiveness of the area. However I see one empty shop has a derilict van parked outside it which has been there for over a year. Neither Erewash or Derbyshire County Council seem bothered and some of the shop fronts are a disgrace. The owners don't seem to give a damn. But we must keep trying. Just opposing change is not good enough.

  3. While the growth of supermarkets does bring some concern, I believe that anything that can provide jobs to people in Sandiacre and get people shopping in the town rather than traveling out will help benefit the area. The streetscape improvements are certainly part of it be so is redeveloping the empty land that Tesco want to build on. Just my tuppence worth
