REMEMBERANCE OF TIMES PAST

Seemly neglected and unloved is a lovely little old mill which if not by a watercourse is at least by a stream of traffic. Clearly visible from Chalons Way, Ilkeston, it's a shame it isn't in a proper state of repair. Would it be asking too much for one or other of our local Councils to use the powers they possess to save this bit of local heritage. Once little gems like this are lost they will be lost forever. I believe that would be a real shame for Erewash.

  1. The staple industry In Ilkeston at the turn of the 19th century was framework knitting.

The decline in the trade was partly compensated by the expansion of the local textile trade and by 1850, Ilkeston was home to 5 hosiery & 6 lace factories.

The C & F Sudbury factory on Market Street, the George Maltby ( Hallam Mills ) factory on Little Hallam Lane and the Francis Ball and Sons factory, a Grade 2 listed building, on Burr Lane still stand.

The Ball's 4 storey brick built hosiery / lace / glove factory was built around 1845 and is the earliest substantial factory in the town plus Queen Victoria bought gloves from the factory.
